Trailmix

A scavenger hunt that to gets people outside in Athens, GA.

Pt. 1  ---  Identifying the Challenge

My primary research investigated current resources which connect Athenians & visitors with outdoor spaces. To better understand the culture of outdoor recreation in Athens, I talked to locals about their experiences connecting with spaces over their time in town.

I noticed a shared perspective: many people knew what was out there, but were unsure about how to get to these places and what they could to do there.

Athens has 2,500+ acres of outdoor spaces.

There are many hurdles to exploring new places.

Current resources are unclear and unapproachable.

Pt. 2  ---  What Will It Be?

Now that I understood the problems, I started designing a solution to get people outside effectively. Approachability and ease of use were most important to me to remove existing barriers to outdoor recreation, and these principles informed the design process.

Throughout three iterations, I developed a community-based resource which complies existing, public information to get people outside easily.

CARD DESIGN

Once I developed the concept, I designed multiple iterations of cards to include the most important information and context on the scavenger hunt, all with a cohesive identity.

INCENTIVE

What would persuade people to get out there? I answered this question by designing 10 stamps, each placed at their respective park, hidden to be found & collected by Trailmixers.

Pt. 3  ---  Product identity & function

Meet Trailmix, a challenge for you and a friend to get outside, collect stamps, and explore Athens parks.

Distributed for free at local Athens outdoor stores in packs of two, Trailmix is designed to be shared with friends. Each set contains an information card & 10 park cards. Clip the cards to your backpack and get exploring! Pick a park from the Trailmix, list, and collect a stamp from each location. Once you’ve collected all 10 stamps, you’ve completed the challenge!

TYPES OF CARDS

1. Intro Card ---- introduces the Trailmix user to the game through a stylized set of instructions, brief list of icons, and a checklist of every park that’s a part of Trailmix.

2. Park Cards -----  each park on the Trailmix list has it’s own card. The front of each park card has a breif intro to the location & a set of icons featuring each activity you can do there. On the back of each Park Card is a map of each spot & a hint leading the user to the hidden stamp.

i’m glad you’re here!
